Senator John Heinz History Center

Pittsburgh has a rich history that goes back over 250 years. From playing a pivotal role in the French and Indian War to being the launching site for Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, the history of Pittsburgh is in essence the history of the United States itself. The Historical Society of Western Pennsylvania has been chronicling that history since 1879, in 1996 opened the Senator John Heinz History Center in the Strip District to share it with residents and visitors of the Steel City alike. The 275,000-square-foot museum includes a library and archives on the sixth floor, as well as the Western Pennsylvania Sports Museum. The Heinz History Center also operates the Fort Pitt Museum at the Point of downtown Pittsburgh, offering glimpses of the birth of the Steel City and life in the frontier era of the country. From steamboats to streetcars, Heinz ketchup to Westinghouse electrics, the History Center has it all.
